Staples opens its first store.
May 1, 1986
Founded by former grocery store rivals Leo Kahn and Thomas Stemberg, the office supply company’s first store is located at 1660 Soldiers Field Road. Stemberg came up with the idea for the company when he couldn’t find a place to buy a replacement printer ribbon on a Sunday in 1985. It goes on to become the largest office supply store in the world with locations in 26 countries.
